In Horoma's Head 19
Last installment before going on holidays.
Just like last month I noticed that I haven't taken any notes throughout this month regarding topics to write on which for me is a bad sign because it basically means I haven't been "capturing" much as Tiago Forte would say.
Capturing really is at the core of personal and professional growth as it basically relates to all new information you integrate into your knowledge base system. Consequently if you're not capturing anything you have no new knowledge to integrate and expand from. the two other steps (organize, share) are of course paramount too but they are directly tied to the input (capture) part.
Is that the end of the world though? Well of course it is.
While ideally you want to be doing the 3 steps continuously throughout the year and constantly capture, organize and share, it generally happens that you'll end up focusing on one area for certain period of time depending on what tasks you're focusing on.
Last year for me was mostly about capturing and organizing. I would be reading a lot, taking notes, organizing those notes and other personal experiment findings into a sensible curriculum.
These are actually the two steps I enjoy the most as they are the ones that you personally draw the most value from. The sharing part is where you package things for other people. They will then, ideally, draw value from this. So paradoxically even though I'm mostly putting together this course for other people, I'm not getting any value out of this step for my personal growth. I could even go as far as saying I dread this part. Properly preparing slides and animations, getting clean recordings is a huge amount of work that I unfortunately don't find enjoyable. But such is life I guess.
Now one thing that for sure is important is to not stick to one step for too long. Todd Henry had another way of framing a similar idea with three personas : dreamer, drifter and doer.
The idea is that these personas tend to favor one aspect and discard the others to the point of hindering their own potential growth.
Todd Henry then talks about another type of persona that combines all three steps : the developer. The person that captures knowledge, meshes ideas together and properly puts them into practice.
In short this is what persona you sort of should aim at since as an artist or creative more broadly you want to be skillful in those three areas.
Back to my little story where basically I'm hoping that as soon as I'm done with the course which is just production from now on and until end of September, I can get back to a more balanced schedule with more capturing and reflecting for a while.
Time will tell.
In the meantime I have some commissions and then will be off to Budapest and then France for a break.
I hope you're all managing to get some time off during this summer. I'm definitely looking forward to a nice break and then getting back to the promising projects I have in the pipeline (including the course... of course).
And on this hopeful note, I will end this little newsletter for the month.
If you find this utterly boring and useless, please let me know before unsubscribing 🎀. If on the other hand you do like it, then I'm glad, and feel free to share it with your archviz pals that would maybe like it too by sending them here : https://www.horoma.net/newsletter-subscription
