In Horoma's Head 10

Hi everyone,

October kind of flew by quickly, and I guess the last two months of the year will unfortunately be just the same. What have I been up to this past month?

🐏🐏🐏

The world of Youtube 🎵🔈🧠

As usual, 3 new videos this month :

Horoma Critiques Horoma #10 is out and covers a very old project I worked on in the first year I started freelancing. Since this project had the peculiarity of having been done through a platform, I mostly talk about this aspect and how detrimental it was to getting the job properly done. I also, of course, cover a bit the actual technical and artistic aspects.

The 6 pillars of the ideal workflow is the start of an open conversation and research I've been leading for quite some time tackling the quest of the perfect workflow in archviz. The finding so far shows that there is no such thing and that the "perfect" workflow is more an array of skills and a mindset that revolves around 6 pillars that I'm presenting to you in the video. I hope they will be useful to starting artists, or even ones that want to refine their current workflow.

Last but not least, In Two common artistic tips you probably don't use properly, I cover two tips that we hear all the time about to finetune composition and that are often used a bit too blindly in my opinion. In this video I take the time to explain why they carry more weight than what one would think, and dive deeper on how to use these tips more mindfully so that you don't do more harm than good to your images.

The world of podcast 🎼🎹💻🎙

Just wanted to mention again, in case you missed it in the newsletter from last month, that I was a guest on There's Something About Archviz, a very insightful podcast dealing with often overlooked topics of archviz. While the main theme for the exchange was about client relationships, we did cover many other small topics that are dear to me like client relationships, the mindset to adopt to minimize frustration and maximize creativity, my background altogether, and other things like that.

You can listen to it here : https://www.linkedin.com/posts/fbiancullo_architecture-community-podcast-activity-6849238163999756288-Q5rE (links in the comment section)

Hope you'll enjoy the content and get some useful advice for your future contracts.

The world of interviews 🎥📹🎦

Interviews are by far my favourite medium, probably on top of autobiography actually, when it comes to understanding the process and philosophy of any person.

A friend from university (hey Billy!) recently sent me this short interview done by Espazium with the two founders of Filippo Bolognese studio.

While this is probably not the best example of a deep dive interview (it is quite short), there are still some interesting bits and pieces to take away from it (client relationship, no instagram, focus on architecture, etc) so I think it's worth the 5 minutes of reading 😁

The world of the never ending course 🎨🖼🎭

Little update on the Competition From The Ground Up. It is taking way longer than I hoped, but the content is also much better than I envisioned several months ago. I'm done with the whole structure and content. The new interactive scene that will be used for the workshop part is also finally done. I now need to record all the content again, edit, and update the landing page. This is basically the "production" part I'd say, since all the thinking has been done, and was the most intense part I think.

Having been very busy with commission work lately has definitely not helped in staying on track of my schedule, but I'm hoping to release the brand new version of the course early next year and do cohorts more regularly.

Either way I'll do my best to stay on track and am really looking forward to showing the new version to the former students as well as the future ones 😊💪

The world of ergonomics 💺🪑 🎙🖥💻

Sometimes very small changes have big impacts. And its the case of changing a chair, and mounting your monitors on VESA arms.

It took me a long time to finally do those simple steps, and the benefits are incredible in the newly found ergonomy, tidiness and minimalism look the desk now has.

There's one thing I want to mention, and that's because I've fallen short many times on the topic : when it comes to health, well-being - don't wait.

Since I tend to travel a lot and change locations every 6 or 12 months, it's been complicated for me to settle properly with a proper desk, chair or bed thinking that I would be moving soon and it wouldn't be worth the investment. But if there are two things I've learnt :

- You always stay (much) longer than you've expected
- You should buy the things you might need at the very beginning, and worse case scenario you'll just sell them back when you're done. You might lose a bit of money, but your body and mind will thank you.

The world of art in emotions 🖼🖼🎭👨‍🎤

Here is a very fun interactive map I came across some time ago while doing research for my masterclass.

Put together by two emotion psychologists, the map was built based on the survey of 1300 people judging 1500 artworks. The goal was, amongst other things, to see how many visual emotions can art create?

The resulting map is very evocative and shows the interlinking of different emotions in a totally new light.

The world of Facebook and Meta 🦓🐴🦄

Some of you might have heard of this : Facebook (the company, not the platform) is changing its name and will now be called Meta, in a direct reference to what science-fiction writers and tech-researchers call the metaverse.

While the new rebranding is pretty underwhelming, and the trackrecord of Facebook being what it is I couldn't be less hyped about it, it is still a good opportunity to suggest you to read a classic of science fiction : Snow Crash.

Written by Neal Stephenson (who also wrote other very cool novels such as the The Diamond Age, Cryptonomicon, Quicksilver, Reamde, etc.), the novel merges several topics (technology, politics, linguistics to name just a few) in a very fast-paced and fascinating story.

Interestingly, the whole metaverse described in the book is pretty "negative", which gives a nice irony to the whole new branding of Facebook.

So if you're in a need of a good fiction book to read, give this one a go!

Time to wrap up!

Now, I'm off to Madrid for a couple of days, before diving back into some very promising competitions for the rest of the month.

I hope you'll enjoy some of (or all!) the content I shared here and would love to hear back from you if you ever want to further the conversation on one of the topic, feel free to reach out to me!

If you find this utterly boring and useless, please let me know before unsubscribing 🎀. If on the other hand you do like it, then I'm glad, and feel free to share it with your archviz pals that would maybe like it too by sending them here : https://www.horoma.net/newsletter-subscription

Thank you

All the best for the upcoming month!

Cheers
Simon
